I was alerted to this call to action via Facebook from one of my favorite instructors at the gym. Hooray for the power of sharing information through social media!
Ever since my son was diagnosed with a serious peanut allergy, I have dedicated considerable time and energy to educating myself on what he can and cannot eat. As a result, my research has motivated me to change the way we eat entirely! I am breaking a lifetime of patterns for myself and teaching my son the value of eating good wholesome foods. I am passionate about being involved with organizations that promote healthy habits for mind, body and spirit. The LunchBox is a fabulous program focused on generating awareness and effecting change within our schools by requesting that congress donate one more dollar for every child, thus enabling a more healthy lunch to be served in schools! This past weekend, while exercising with one of my friends, we had a random discussion about bread. We both seemed a bit unsure about whether whole grain or whole wheat bread is the better choice for us to eat. I recalled Sara from Fitness Fun 4 All had written a blog post a while ago about this topic and figured it would be good to share with the Natural Kidz community.
Picking Bread Can Be Complicated

The other day my friend held up a loaf of bread and said “is this bread good?” I said lets check the ingredients list and find out.
There are more varieties of bread in the supermarket than ever before – 7 Grain, 12 Grain, Whole Wheat, Country Wheat, Country White, Buttermilk, Oat Bran, Double Fiber, Potato, Stoneground Wheat – and about 50 more options. With all these options how do you know which bread is the best and healthiest choice?
Well, let’s start with white bread – it is the least healthy option – the flour in white bread has been so processed that it does not have any fiber left and many of the nutrients that were in the grains are gone too, so they “enrich it” with added nutrients. Because white bread lacks fiber, it can spike your blood sugar and is not as filling as bread made with whole grains. A lot of kids can pretty easily make the switch to whole grains. Start small, – like picking a “country whole wheat” bread – which is a little heartier than white, but not as grainy as 100% whole wheat. Once they adjust to that (toasting & some jelly or butter helps), then step it up a notch and look for bread with 100% whole wheat, instead of enriched whole wheat flour. Again, enriched flour is basically flour with added nutrients (to compensate for the lost nutrients from processing). So the more processed your grains are, the less nutritious they are.
So a bread with the name 7 Grain should be good, right? Just reading the name of the bread doesn’t always give you the full story. Anything with the word “grain” in it is going to be better than white bread – but the main ingredient might still be enriched flour. So, in order to know what is the best choice when looking for bread – you need to read the ingredient list – what they name the bread is just part of the story (marketing). For example, Oroweat’s 7 Grain bread is made with enriched whole wheat flour, whereas their 100% Whole Wheat bread is made with 100% whole wheat flour. The higher up on the list the whole wheat is, the more of it there is in the bread. Also look at the fiber content of the bread – the more fiber, the fuller it will make you feel, and the better it is for your digestion.
If you can go all the way to a sprouted whole wheat bread (found in markets that carry natural foods), then you are getting the least processed and most nutrient dense bread – but realize that those usually need to be refrigerated because they have a shorter shelf life.
